Commissioned by Art Start, a Manhattan non-profit, this project attempted to map the concept of ‘home’ and ‘homeless’ as seen through a community of young people living in shelters in the Lower East Side and Chinatown, Manhattan.
All the communities represented have either a direct or indirect association with the NYC shelter system. The project is an interactive sound based piece, with corresponding photography and video components. Displayed here is a selection of the imagery used in the project.
The resulting project was displayed in an exhibition setting, as a fund raiser for Art Start, as well as distributed to a range of stake holders in the NYC youth, homeless, public housing and non-profit sectors as a way of communicating a specific group of young people’s experience with being ‘young’ and in the housing shelter system of New York City. The project also served as a creative tool in advocating policy change and improvement of homeless services.
